Thousands of Catholic volunteers needed for census

POSTED ON WPTZ.COM. CALL IT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH’S VERSION OF THE U.S. CENSUS. PARISHONERS IN THE OGDENSBURG DIOCESE WILL SOON BE GOING DOOR-TO-DOOR. WPTZ’S ALISON CAREY JOINS US LIVE WITH DETAILS ON THE PROJECT. ALISON? ALISON: BISHOPS OFTEN SET GOALS FOR THEIR RESPECTIVE DIOCESE. ONE OF BISHOP LAVALLEY’S GOALS IS TO PROVIDE A “FACE OF FAITH TO ALL NEIGHBORS.” VISITING PEOPLE IS KIND OF WHO WE ARE. WE DON’T REMAIN IN A CHURCH. WE ARE ALWAYS MOVING TO A COMMUNITY. ALISON: FOUR YEARS, INDIVIDUAL SURVEYS ARE CONDUCTED MEMBERS OF THEIR — CONDUCTED SURVEYS OF THEIR MEMBERS. WE MUST KNOW WHO THEY ARE AND WHERE THEY LIVE TO INVITE THEM TO KNOW US. ALISON: THE CENSUS IS A WAY FOR THE CHURCH TO COLLECT INFORMATION ABOUT ITS PARISHIONERS. TO KNOW WHO ARE ELDERLY ARE SO WE CAN BREAK HIM IN A DEITY THEM IN THE HOME. THEY MAY WANT IT BUT MAY NOT KNOW THE SERVICE IS AVAILABLE. ALISON: IT IS ALSO ABOUT PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE. THE ALLOCATION OF PRIEST SERVICES WILL BE AFFECTED IN THE FUTURE. THERE IS A SPECIFIC VOCATION GOAL FOR THE DIOCESE AS WELL BUT THAT IS INDEPENDENT OF THE CENSUS. ALISON: PERHAPS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE WILL BE RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS. THEY’LL NEED THOUSANDS OF HELPERS TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT BY AUGUST. 1000 VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED INCLUDING COUNTY ALONE. TRAINING SESSIONS ARE ALREADY UNDERWAY AND PARISHIONERS WILL BE GOING DOOR-TO-DOOR IN A FEW WEEKS. THEY DO NOT HAVE TO BE A THEOLOGICAL EXPERT. THEY SIMPLY DO A FRIENDLY NEIGHBOR VISIT, SEE WHAT IS NEEDED THERE, GET THEM DIRECTED TOWARD THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE. ALISON: THE CENSUS WILL GATHER INFORMATION FROM IDENTIFIED CATHOLIC HOUSEHOLDS ONLY AND
