HERSELF TO COMMUNITY SERVICE. 16 WAPTS ALLIE WARE SHOWS US A PROGRAM CALLED CLASSROOM CLOSETS THAT IS HELPING STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT. JPS 8TH GRADER ALEXANDRIA DEANS HAS BEEN DONATING HER OLD SCHOOL UNIFORMS TO CHARITY FOR YEARS BUT NOW HAS DECIDED TO DO SOMEHTING BIGGER. SHE WAS TIRED OF ME ASKING FOR HER CLOTHES SO SHE SAID WELL LETS JUST GIVE THEM TO PEOPLE IN NEED . THAT IS WHERE THE IDEA OF CLASSROOM CLOSETS CAME FROM. IT IS A PROGRAM WHERE STUDENTS DONATE OLD UNIFORMS TO STOCK A CLOSET INSIDE SOME JPS SCHOOLS. IF THERE IS AN IN SCHOOL EMERGENCY LIKE A SPILL OR SOMETHING YOU CAN GO TO A CLOSET AND IT REDUCES CONFLICT IN THE SCHOOL SUPPORTERS OF CLASSROOM CLOSETS SAY HAVING UNIFORMS AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS PUTS MORE FOCUS ON THEIR SCHOOL WORK RATHER THAN APPEARANCE. WE ARE ABLE TO INTERVENE WITH THE PARENTS AND GET ON WITH THE EDUCATION OF OUR STUDENTS. ANYONE CAN DONATE TO CLASSROOM CLOSETS AND ALEXANDRIA SAYS THEY WILL TAKE ANY SIZE OR COLOR. MAYBE THEY HAVE OUTGROWN THEM OR 8TH GRADERS THAT ARE GRADUATING AND GOING TO HIGH SCHOOL THEY WON’T NEED UNIFORMS SO WE GET THEM TO PEOPLE IN NEED. THE CLASSROOM CLOSET ISN’T JUST FOR UNIFORMS THEY ALSO HAVE EXTRA SHOES AND HYGEINE PRODUCTS FOR STUDENTS JUST IN CASE THEY NEED THEM. ITS A GOOD FEELING TO SEE THAT THINGS AREN’T GOING TO WASTE…WE HAVE SO MANY THINGS WE TAKE FOR GRANTED. IN JACKSON AW 16 WAPT NEWS ALEXANDRIA TELLS US HER GOAL IS TO GET A CLOSET IN EVERY JPS SCHOOL. SEPTEMBER IS CHILDHOOD CANCER
