THIS COMES AS THE AGENCY IS PHASING OUT ITS FOSTER AND ADOPTION SERVICES, AFTER A SAME SEX COUPLE TRIED TO ADOPT A CHILD NEWS 4’S JENN SCHANZ IS HEARING FROM CATHOLIC CHARITIES C-E-O TONIGHT, JENN? THE AGENCY’S CEO SAYS AS A CATHOLIC ORGANIZATION, THE GROUP MUST BE CONSISTENT WITH CHURCH TEACHING… THAT INCLUDES THAT MARRIAGE IS BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN. THE COALITION FOR ECONOMIC JUSTICE SAYS IF THAT’S THE CASE, USE YOUR OWN MONEY. THE GROUP ALSO HAD A MESSAGE FOR BISHOP MALONE. ((“RESIGN. RESIGN. RESIGN.”)) PROTESTERS WITH THE COALITION FOR ECONOMIC JUSTICE WANT BISHOP MALONE TO STEP DOWN AS HEAD OF BUFFALO’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, AND AS CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD FOR CATHOLIC CHARITIES. THEY RALLIED OUTSIDE A BOARD MEETING TUESDAY MORNING. ((“IF YOU WANT TO SERVE THE PUBLIC AND USE PUBLIC DOLLARS, 18 MILLION OF OUR PUBLIC DOLLARS, YOU CAN’T DISCRIMINATE.”)) IN AUGUST, CATHOLIC CHARITIES ANNOUNCED IT WOULD PHASE OUT IT’S FOSTER AND ADOPTION PROGRAM, AFTER A SAME-SEX MARRIED COUPLE WANTED TO ADOPT A CHILD. IT MAKES UP AROUND 45-50 PERCENT OF IT’S 40 MILLION DOLLARS IN ANNUAL FUNDING. SEVERAL EMPLOYEES WERE AFFECTED BY CATHOLIC CHARITIES’ DECISIONTO PHASE OUT THE FOSTER AND ADOPTION PROGRAM. MOST ARE NOW WORKING WITH OTHER AGENCIES, WHICH WILL PROVIDE SERVICES FOR THE CURRENT FOSTER AND ADOPTIVE FAMILIES.
