WHEN HE CAME INTO GALILEE, THE GALILEANS WELCOMED HIM, SINCE THEY HAD SEEN ALL HE HAD DONE IN JERUSALEM AT THE FEAST; FOR THEY THEMSELVES HAD GONE TO THE FEAST. JESUS SAID TO HIM, “UNLESS YOU PEOPLE SEE SIGNS AND WONDERS, YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE.” THE ROYAL OFFICIAL SAID TO HIM, “SIR, COME DOWN BEFORE MY CHILD DIES.” JESUS SAID TO HIM, “YOU MAY GO; YOUR SON WILL LIVE.” THE MAN BELIEVED WHAT JESUS SAID TO HIM AND LEFT. WHILE THE MAN WAS ON HIS WAY BACK, HIS SLAVES MET HIM AND TOLD HIM THAT HIS BOY WOULD LIVE. HE ASKED THEM WHEN HE BEGAN TO RECOVER. THEY TOLD HIM, “THE FEVER LEFT HIM YESTERDAY, ABOUT ONE IN THE AFTERNOON.” THE FATHER REALIZED THAT JUST AT THAT TIME JESUS HAD SAID TO HIM, “YOUR SON WILL LIVE,” AND HE AND HIS WHOLE HOUSEHOLD CAME TO BELIEVE. NOW THIS WAS THE SECOND SIGN JESUS DID WHEN HE CAME TO GALILEE FROM JUDEA. ♪ (LATIN) VERBUM DOMINI ♪ R. LAUS TIBI, CHRISTE A FEW WEEKS AGO I WENT ON A PILGRIMAGE TO ITALY ALONG WITH OUR OWN BROTHER JOHN THERESE AND ALSO FATHER TRIGILO AND SEVERAL SEMINARIANS FROM MOUNT ST. MARY. AMONG THE PLACES WE VISITED WAS LON CIANO, A PILGRIMAGE SITE WHERE THERE IS A PRESERVED IN A CHURCH MANAGED BY THE FRANCISCANS A WELL-REKNOWN EUCHARISTIC MIRACLE. AS THE STORY GOES UP MONK IN THE 8TH CENTURY A.D. WAS EXPERIENCING SERIOUS DOUBTS ABOUT THE REAL PRESENCE OF JESUS IN THE HOLY EUCHARIST. ON ONE OCCASION AS HE WAS CELEBRATING MASS, THE HOST ON THE ALTAR CHANGED INTO LIVE FLESH AND THE WINE ON IN THE CHALICE CHANGED INTO ACTUAL BLOOD. THE MONK WAS SO ASTONISHED BY THIS MIRACLE THAT HE INVITED THE CONGREGATION TO COME FORWARD AND HE SAID ALL FORTUNATE WITNESSES TO WHOM THE BLESSED GOD TO CONFOUND MY UNBELIEF HAS WISH TO REVEAL HIMSELF VISIBLE TO OUR EYES. COME AND MARVEL AT OUR GOD SO CLOSE TO US. BEHOLD THE FLESH AND BLOOD OF OUR MOST BELOVED CHRIST. THIS MIRACLE REMOVED ALL OF HIS DOUBTS. THE SPECIES ARE PRESERVED TO THIS DAY, THE FLESH IN A MONSTRANCE AND THE BLOOD WHICH IS COAGULATED INTO 5 GLOBULES, IN A GLASS CHALICE FOR DISPLAY. A SCIENTIST IN THE 1970S CONDUCTED A STUDY OF THE SPECIES AND HE CONCLUDED THAT THE FLESH WAS INDEED HUMAN HEART TISSUE. THEY FOUND SECTIONS OF THE MYOCARDIUM AND THE INDO CARDIUM AND THE VAGUS NERVE AND THE LEFT VENTRICLE. AND THE BLOOD WAS REAL BLOOD. IT WAS THE SAME PROTEINS AS YOU WOULD FIND IN BLOOD. ALONG WITH MINERALS SUCH AS CHLORIDES, PHOSPHORUS, MAGNESIUM, POTASSIUM, SODIUM AND CALCIUM. BOTH THE FLESH AND BLOOD EVEN HAD THE SAME BLOOD TYPE. A B. AND THE FACT THAT BOTH SPECIES ARE STILL PRESERVED AFTER ALL THESE CENTURIES WITHOUT COMPLETELY DETERIORATING IS EXTRAORDINARY IN ITSELF. THIS BRINGS US TO CONSIDER A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION FOR ALL CATHOLICS AND EVEN ALL CHRISTIANS. WHAT IS THE BASIS OF OUR BELIEF? DO WE BELIEVE IN GOD AND ALL THE DOCTRINES OF THE NICENE CREED, AND EVERYTHING THE CHURCH TEACHES BECAUSE WE HAVE SEEN THESE EVENTS OURSELVES? DO WE BELIEVE BECAUSE WE CAN REASON OUR WAY TO THE TRUTH OF THE FAITH? DO WE BELIEVE BECAUSE OF THE SIGNS, WONDERS AND MIRACLES THE LORD HAS PERFORMED OR ANY OTHER SAINTS HAVE PERFORMED? ON WHAT FOUNDATION REST OUR FAITH? THE KEY LINE IN TODAY’S READING FROM JOHN IS WHEN JESUS SAYS TO THE ROYAL OFFICIAL, UNLESS YOU PEOPLE SEE SIGNS AND WONDERS YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE. AS A SIDE NOTE, IT MAY SEEM A LITTLE HARSH TO OUR MODERN EARS TO HEAR JESUS SAY YOU PEOPLE. BUT THE ORIGINAL GREEK DOES NOT HAVE THE WORD PEOPLE IN IT. IT HAS THE PLURAL FORM OF YOU. SO IN MORE SOUTHERN TRANSLATION MIGHT BE MORE APPROPRIATE IN THIS INSTANCE. IT WOULD BE MORE APPROPRIATE TO SAY UNLESS YOU ALL SEE SIGNS AND WONDERS YOU ALL WILL NOT BELIEVE. IT IS A MORE GENTLE THING. NOW THIS LINE MIGHT COME AS A SURPRISE FOR THOSE WHO THINK THAT JESUS PERFORM SIGNS AND WONDERS AS A DIRECT PROOF OF HIS IDENTITY. THIS CANNOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. IF YOU THINK ABOUT THIS FOR A MOMENT THE TRUTHFULNESS OF THE WORD OF JESUS IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE. EVEN MORE THAN WITNESSING THE SIGNS. IN FACT SIGNS AND WONDERS SUCH AS MIRACLES AND HEALINGS DO NOT IN THEMSELVES PROVE THE VERACITY OF THE WORD OF JESUS. IN OTHER WORDS YOU CANNOT SAY JESUS DID X, Y, AND Z. HE HEALED THIS PERSON, HE ROSE THIS PERSON FROM THE DEAD, AND SO FORTH THEREFORE JESUS IS DIVINE OR THEREFORE HE IS THE MESSIAH. SIGNS MERELY POINT TO REALITY. BUT THEY ARE NOT DIRECT PROOF OF IT. THEY ENABLE THE INVISIBLE REALITY TO APPEAR MORE REASONABLE. THE POINT IS THAT WE DO NOT ARRIVE AT SUPERNATURAL FAITH BY NATURAL REASON ALONE. PRIMARILY BY A SUPERNATURAL GIFT. OF FAITH. A PERSON CAN SEE ALL OF THE SIGNS THEY WANT AND STILL REFUSED TO BELIEVE. THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN PARAGRAPH 156 SAYS WHAT MOVES US TO BELIEVE IS NOT THE FACT THAT REVEALED TRUTHS APPEAR AS TRUE AND INTELLIGIBLE IN THE LIGHT OF OUR NATURAL REASON. WE BELIEVE BECAUSE OF THE AUTHORITY OF GOD HIMSELF WHO REVEALS THEM, WHO CAN NEITHER DECEIVE NOR BE DECEIVED. IN OTHER WORDS WE DO NOT ACCEPT THE REALITY OF THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST OR THE HOLY EUCHARIST OR ANY OTHER TRUTHS OF THE DEPOSIT OF FAITH ON THE BASIS OF HER OWN NATURAL ABILITY TO REASON OUR WAY TO THESE TRUTHS. WE ARE INCAPABLE OF ARRIVING AT THESE TRUTHS OF ARRIVING AT THE TRUTH OF FAITH THROUGH REASON ALONE. OUR FAITH IS SOLELY ESTABLISHED ON THE AUTHORITY OF GOD HIMSELF ON OUR SUBMISSION TO THE AUTHORITY OF GOD HIMSELF WHO REVEALS SUCH TRUTH. AS ST. PAUL SAYS IN 2ND CORINTHIANS WE WALK BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT. AND THE CATECHISM PARAGRAPH CONTINUES. SO THAT THE SUBMISSION OF OUR FAITH MIGHT NEVERTHELESS BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH REASON, GOD WILT THAT EXTERNAL PROOFS OF HIS REVELATION SHOULD BE JOINED TO THE INTERNAL HELPS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. SO IT IS NOT JUST BY THE EXTERNAL PROOFS BUT THAT IS THAT INTERNAL HELP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO HELP US TO COMPEL US TOWARD BELIEF AND TOWARDS FAITH. THEN THE CATECHISM EXPLAINS WHAT THESE EXTERNAL PROOFS ARE. THUS THE MIRACLES OF CHRIST AND THE SAINTS, PROPHECIES, THE CHURCH’S GROWTH IN HOLINESS AND HOLINESS AND HER FRUITFULNESS AND STABILITY ARE THE MOST CERTAIN SIGNS OF DIVINE REVELATION ADAPTED TO THE INTELLIGENCE OF ALL. THEY ARE MOTIVES OF CREDIBILITY. WHICH SHOW THAT THE ASSENT OF FAITH IS BY NO MEANS A BLIND IMPULSE OF THE MIND. YOU SEE THERE ARE THESE COMPELLING PROOFS BECAUSE AS WE KNOW I AM SORRY TO ALL THE KIDS OUT THERE WHO MAY STILL BELIEVE THIS WE DO NOT BELIEVE IN SANTA CLAUS. WE DO BELIEVE OF COURSE THAT ST. NICHOLAS WAS A REAL PERSON BUT THERE IS NO OTHER BASIS FOR BELIEF IN SANTA CLAUS THERE IS NO TRADITION THERE IS NO SACRED SCRIPTURE THAT POINTS THE EXISTENCE OF SANTA CLAUS. RIGHT? BUT WE HAVE THESE MOTIVES OF CREDIBILITY IN OUR FAITH. THESE MIRACLES AND SIGNS THAT JESUS HAS PERFORMED THAT ARE MEANT TO BUTTRESS HIS TESTIMONY BUT NOT DIRECTLY PROVE IT. AND WHEN JESUS PROPOSES SOMETHING FOR OUR BELIEF SUCH AS THE FAITH THAT HE WILL RAISE US UP ON THE LAST DAY, HIS MIRACLES COUPLED WITH THE GRACE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ARE MEANT TO MOVE US TO CONVINCE US OF HIS WORK. THE GREATEST MIRACLE IS OF COURSE HIS OWN RESURRECTION WHICH POINTS TO THE SAME REALITY THAT AWAITS ALL OF US ON OUR LAST DAY OUR OWN RESURRECTION. GETTING BACK TO THE READING AT HAND, JESUS IS BASICALLY REBUKING THE ROYAL OFFICIAL FOR HIS LACK OF BELIEF. THE OFFICIAL WAS SEEKING A HEALING FROM JESUS FOR HIS SON, IN ORDER THAT HE MIGHT BELIEVE. HIS ORDERING SHOULD HAVE BEEN REVERSED. THE OFFICIAL AND THIS IS HOW A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE GOSPELS ARE WHEN THEY ASK FOR HEALING FROM JESUS THEY ALREADY BELIEVE AND HE SAID IT WAS YOUR FAITH THAT SAVED YOU BUT NOT IN THE CASE OF THIS ROYAL OFFICIAL. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR A HEALING AS A RESULT OF THIS BELIEF NOT IN ORDER THAT HE MIGHT BELIEVE. THE HEALING SHOULD BE ACCORDING TO ONE’S FAITH AND NOT MERELY SERVE AS A PROOF OF JESUS’S WORD. IN FAITH, WE OUGHT TO ACCEPT JESUS’S WORD AND HIS AUTHORITY REGARDLESS OF WHETHER A SIGN IS PERFORMED OR NOT. THE MIRACLE MAY BE A MOTIVE O CREDIBILITY, AND AID TOWARD THE ASSENT OF FAITH BUT THE ASSENT OF FAITH IS PRIMARY. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO POINT ALL THIS OUT? THE FACT IS THAT SOME PEOPLE HAVE A MISTAKEN NOTION ABOUT FAITH. THEY SEEM TO THINK THAT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE UNMISTAKABLY AND UNDENIABLY PROVEN BEYOND A SHADOW OF DOUBT BEFORE THEY WILL BELIEVE. THE PROBLEM WITH THIS IS IF YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING FOR YOURSELF THEN THERE IS NO LONGER ANY NEED FOR BELIEF, THEN YOU HAVE SIGHT. BUT PAUL SAYS WE WALK BY FAITH AND NOT SIGHT. GIVING THE ASSENT OF FAITH REALLY REQUIRES HUMILITY. IT MEANS THAT WE PLACE OUR COMPLETE TRUST IN THE WORD OF GOD. IN THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH SPELLS IT OUT IN PARAGRAPH 157 FAITH IS CERTAIN. IT IS MORE CERTAIN THAT ALL HUMAN KNOWLEDGE BECAUSE IT IS FOUNDED ON THE VERY WORD OF GOD WHO CANNOT LIE. TO BE SURE, REVEALED TRUTHS CAN SEEM OBSCURE TO HUMAN REASON AND EXPERIENCE, BUT THE CERTAINTY THAT THE DIVINE LIGHT GIVES IS GREATER THAN THAT WHICH THE LIGHT OF NATURAL REASON GIVES. 10,000 DIFFICULTIES DO NOT MAKE ONE DOUBT. THE CATECHISM IS MAKING AN INCREDIBLY BOLD CLAIM HERE. THE CHURCH IS SAYING THE TRUTH OF DIVINE REVELATION IS MORE CERTAIN THAT ALL HUMAN KNOWLEDGE. IT IS MORE CERTAIN THAN EVEN THE KNOWLEDGE WE ATTAIN THROUGH OUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OR OWN SENSES OR THROUGH ANY OF THE SCIENCES AS GOOD AS AND AS IMPORTANT AS THEY ARE. WHY? BECAUSE THE KNOWLEDGE OF REVELATION COMES DIRECTLY FROM THE WORD OF GOD FROM A GOD WHO CANNOT LIE. WHAT CAN BE MORE CERTAIN THAN THAT? ST. THOMAS AQUINAS WRITES IN HIS HIM, TRUTH HIMSELF SPEAKS TRULY ARE THERE IS NOTHING TRUE. WHEN WE GIVE THE ASSENT OF FAITH TO THE TRUTHS OF DIVINE REVELATION WE ARE NOT SAYING IT WOULD BE NICE IF THESE THINGS ARE TRUE OR I BELIEVE THEM BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO ME. WE BELIEVE PRIMARILY ON THE BASIS OF THE AUTHORITY OF THE WORD OF GOD BECAUSE GOD HIMSELF HAS TOLD US. THIS IS THE FAITH. NOW THE NEXT QUESTION IS NATURALLY HOW DO WE LEARN OF THE WORD OF GOD AND HOW DO WE LEARN OF DIVINE REVELATION? HOW DOES IT COME TO US? THE CATECHISM GIVES US THE ANSWER IN PARAGRAPH 84. THE CATECHISM PRESENTS 2 DISTINCT MODES OF TRANSITION OF TRANSMISSION. SACRED SCRIPTURE AND HOLY TRADITION. SACRED SCRIPTURE IS THE SPEECH OF GOD AS IT IS PUT DOWN IN WRITING UNDER THE BREATH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. AND HOLY TRADITION TRANSMITS IN ITS ENTIRETY IN ITS ENTIRETY THE WORD OF GOD WHICH HAS BEEN ENTRUSTED TO THE APOSTLES BY CHRIST THE LORD AND THE HOLY SPIRIT. IT TRANSMITS IT TO THE SUCCESSORS OF THE APOSTLES SO THAT ENLIGHTENED BY THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH THEY MAY FAITHFULLY PRESERVE, EXPOUND AND SPREAD IT ABROAD BY THEIR TEACHING. NOW SACRED SCRIPTURE AND SACRED TRADITION AND EVEN NATURAL REASON WOULD TELL US THAT THERE NEEDS TO BE A CONSISTENT HUMAN AUTHORITY ESTABLISHED BY CHRIST GIFTED WITH THE SPECIAL CHARISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WHO WOULD BE CHARGED WITH FAITHFULLY TRANSMITTING THE FAITH. SACRED SCRIPTURE AND SACRED TRADITION IS THE TRANSMISSION HOW THE FAITH IS TRANSMITTED BUT THAT NEEDS TO BE SOMEONE TO TRANSMIT IT TO US. HENCE THE APOSTLES AND THEIR SUCCESSORS ARE THE MEN HANDPICKED BY THE LORD TO PRESERVE THE SACRED DEPOSIT. THE CATECHISM IN PARAGRAPH 85 SAYS THE TASK OF GIVING AN AUTHENTIC INTERPRETATION OF THE WORD OF GOD WHETHER IN ITS WRITTEN FORM OR IN THE FORM OF TRADITION HAS BEEN ENTRUSTED TO THE LIVING TEACHING OFFICE OF THE CHURCH ALONE. IT’S AUTHORITY IN THIS MATTER IS EXERCISED IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST. THIS MEANS THAT THE TASK OF INTERPRETATION HAS BEEN ENTRUSTED TO THE BISHOPS IN COMMUNION WITH THE SUCCESSOR OF PETER, THE BISHOP OF ROME. NOW WE MIGHT THINK TO OURSELVES, OKAY DOES THIS NOT MEAN THAT THE POPE AND THE BISHOPS CAN MERELY GIVE ANY INTERPRETATION THEY WANT TO SCRIPTURE AND TRADITION AND JUST SAY THAT THEY ARE DOING IT IN THE NAME OF JESUS? WELL, THE CATECHISM HAS A RESPONSE TO THIS OBJECTION IN THE NEXT
PARAGRAPH. YET THIS MAGISTERIUM IS NOT SUPERIOR TO THE WORD OF GOD, BUT IS ITS SERVANT. IT TEACHES ONLY WHAT HAS BEEN HANDED ON TO IT. AT THE DIVINE COMMAND AND WITH THE HELP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IT LISTENS TO THIS DEVOTEDLY, GUARDS IT WITH DEDICATION, AND EXPOUNDS IT FAITHFULLY. ALL THAT IT PROPOSES FOR BELIEF IS BEING DIVINELY REVEALED IS DRAWN FROM THE SINGLE DEPOSIT OF FAITH. SO IN OTHER WORDS NOT EVEN THE POPE HIMSELF OR ANY OF THE BISHOPS ARE ABOVE THE WORD OF GOD AND SACRED TRADITION. THE DEPOSIT OF FAITH THAT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO US BY JESUS CHRIST. THEY ARE SERVANTS. YOU KNOW THE POPE IS NOT JESUS CHRIST. HE IS THE VICAR OF CHRIST. JESUS CHRIST IS THE ULTIMATE AUTHORITY OF THE CHURCH. THEY HAVE NO AUTHORITY. THE POPE AND THE BISHOPS HAVE NO AUTHORITY TO CHANGE ANY TEACHING THAT HAS BEEN HANDED ON BY CHRIST THROUGH THESE MODES OF TRANSMISSION OF DIVINE REVELATION. THEY ARE SIMPLY TO GUARD AND TO EXPOUND IT. THAT IS THEIR JOB. WE PLACE OUR FIRM FAITH AND OUR TRUST IN THE WORD OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, TRUE GOD AND TRUE MAN, WHO REDEEMED US BY HIS BLOOD, WHO WILL RAISE US UP ON THE LAST DAY AND WHO HAS ENTRUSTED TO THE APOSTLES AND THEIR SUCCESSORS THE SACRED DEPOSIT OF FAITH. BY THIS FAITH WE BELIEVE IN THE HOLY EUCHARIST. THAT MONK FROM LOT CIANO SHOULD HAVE ALREADY BELIEVED. HE WAS SUFFERING FROM DOUBTS. AND JESUS BUTTRESSED HIS FAITH WITH THAT MIRACLE BUT THAT MIRACLE IN ITSELF DOES NOT DIRECTLY PROVE THE REAL PRESENCE OF CHRIST. IT STILL REQUIRES FAITH TO BELIEVE IN THE REAL PRESENCE. SO WE THANK THE LORD FOR THE GRACIOUS SIGNS THAT HE HAS SHOWN TO US AND CONTINUES TO SHOW TO US ESPECIALLY THROUGH HIS SAINTS. YET WE BELIEVE NOT ON THE BASIS OF HIS MIRACLES BUT ON THE BASIS OF HIS WORD OF HIM WHO CAN NEITHER DECEIVE NOR BE BE DECEIVED.
