A READING FROM THE LETTER OF SAINT JAMES. BELOVED: COME NOW, YOU WHO SAY, “TODAY OR TOMORROW WE SHALL GO INTO SUCH AND SUCH A TOWN, SPEND A YEAR THERE DOING BUSINESS, AND MAKE A PROFIT”- YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOUR LIFE WILL BE LIKE TOMORROW. YOU ARE A PUFF OF SMOKE THAT APPEARS BRIEFLY AND THEN DISAPPEARS. INSTEAD YOU SHOULD SAY, “IF THE LORD WILLS IT, WE SHALL LIVE TO DO THIS OR THAT.” BUT NOW YOU ARE BOASTING IN YOUR ARROGANCE. ALL SUCH BOASTING IS EVIL. SO FOR ONE WHO KNOWS THE RIGHT THING TO DO AND DOES NOT DO IT, IT IS A SIN. VERBUM DOMINI. DEO GRATIAS. BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT; THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS THEIRS! BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT; THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS THEIRS! HEAR THIS, ALL YOU PEOPLES; HEARKEN, ALL WHO DWELL IN THE WORLD, OF LOWLY BIRTH OR HIGH DEGREE, RICH AND POOR ALIKE. BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT; THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS THEIRS! WHY SHOULD I FEAR IN EVIL DAYS WHEN MY WICKED ENSNARERS RING ME ROUND? THEY TRUST IN THEIR WEALTH; THE ABUNDANCE OF THEIR RICHES IS THEIR BOAST. BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT; THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS THEIRS! YET IN NO WAY CAN A MAN REDEEM HIMSELF, OR PAY HIS OWN RANSOM TO GOD; TOO HIGH IS THE PRICE TO REDEEM ONE’S LIFE; HE WOULD NEVER HAVE ENOUGH TO REMAIN ALIVE ALWAYS AND NOT SEE DESTRUCTION. BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT; THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS THEIRS! FOR HE CAN SEE THAT WISE MEN DIE, AND LIKEWISE THE SENSELESS AND THE STUPID PASS AWAY, LEAVING TO OTHERS THEIR WEALTH. BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT; THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS THEIRS! ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA. ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA. I AM THE WAY AND THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE, SAYS THE LORD; NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH ME. ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA.>>DOMINUS VOBISCUM. ET CUM SPIRITU TUO.>>LECTIO SANCTI EVANGELII SECUNDUM MARCUM. GLORIA TIBI, DOMINE.>>JOHN SAID TO JESUS, “TEACHER, WE SAW SOMEONE DRIVING OUT DEMONS IN YOUR NAME, AND WE TRIED TO PREVENT HIM BECAUSE HE DOES NOT FOLLOW US.” JESUS REPLIED, “DO NOT PREVENT HIM. THERE IS NO ONE WHO PERFORMS A MIGHTY DEED IN MY NAME WHO CAN AT THE SAME TIME SPEAK ILL OF ME. FOR WHOEVER IS NOT AGAINST US IS FOR US.” VERBUM DOMINI. LAUS TIBI, CHRISTE. WE WELCOME FATHER ED WHO IS AN “OBLATE OF THE VIRGIN MARY”. HE WILL BE A GUEST ON FR. PACWA’S SHOW TONIGHT, “EWTN LIVE”. SAINT JAMES TELLS US IN THE READING TODAY “YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOUR LIFE WILL BE LIKE TOMORROW”. THESE WORDS ARE A GOOD REMINDER TO LIVE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT. WHEN ASKED WHAT THE PRESENT MOMENT WAS, MOTHER ANGELICA WOULD REPLY “WHAT IS JESUS CALLING ME TO DO RIGHT NOW? NOT YESTERDAY OR TOMORROW BUT RIGHT NOW.” GOD’S WILL IS MANIFESTED TO US IN THE DUTIES AND EXPERIENCES OF THE PRESENT MOMENT. WE HAVE ONLY TO ACCEPT THEM AND TO TRY TO BE LIKE JESUS IN THEM. AND TO ACT RIGHT NOW; TODAY. OFTEN WE TEND TO DWELL ON THE PAST WITH FEELINGS OF GUILT OR RESENTMENT BASED ON THE PAST OR WE DWELL TOO MUCH ON THE FUTURE WITH ANXIETY AND WORRY ABOUT THE TRIALS THAT MAY COME OUR WAY. BUT HOW OFTEN DO THE THINGS THAT WE WORRY ABOUT HAPPEN? WE WASTE TIME WORRYING ABOUT THINGS THAT NEVER HAPPENED. IT IS GOOD TO HAVE CONTRITION FOR OUR PAST SINS AND TO PLAN ACCORDINGLY FOR THE FUTURE, BUT WE TEND- BECAUSE OF ORIGINAL SIN, TO DWELL TOO MUCH ON THEM AND TO DWELL EXCESSIVELY ON THE PAST OR ON THE FUTURE. AS A RESULT, WE OFTEN MISS THE GRACES AND OPPORTUNITIES THE LORD GIVES TO US TODAY TO DO HIS WILL TODAY. GOD MIGHT BE ASKING US TO DO SOMETHING VERY SPECIFIC TODAY BUT AGAIN, BECAUSE OF OUR EXCESSIVE CONCERN, WE MISSED THE OPPORTUNITY. ARCHBISHOP FULTON SHEEN SUGGESTED WE LEAVE OUR PAST TO GOD’S MERCY AND ENTRUST OUR FUTURE TO HIS LOVING PROVIDENCE. HE SAID AS WELL THAT “ALL UNHAPPINESS, WHEN THERE IS NO IMMEDIATE CAUSE FOR SORROW”; THERE ARE THINGS THAT WILL CAUSE SORROW, BUT HE SAID, “ALL UNHAPPINESS COMES FROM EXCESSIVE CONCENTRATION ON THE PAST OR FROM EXTREME PREOCCUPATION WITH THE FUTURE”. HE THEN SUGGESTED TWO REMEDIES THAT OUR LORD GAVE US. ONE IS CONFESSION AND THE OTHER IS LIVING IN THE PRESENT MOMENT. ON EASTER SUNDAY EVENING, THE LORD GAVE US THE INSTITUTION OF THE SACRAMENT OF CONFESSION AND THAT BLOTS OUT OUR SIN AND TAKES CARE OF THE PAST. IF SOMETHING BOTHERS OUR CONSCIENCE, WE TAKE IT TO THE LORD IN CONFESSION. WE DO NOT NEED TO WORRY ABOUT IT ANYMORE. WITH REGARD TO DWELLING ON THE FUTURE, OUR LORD TELLS US AND CALLS US TO LIVE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT. REMEMBER, HE SAID “DO NOT BE ANXIOUS ABOUT TOMORROW, FOR TOMORROW WILL BE ANXIOUS FOR ITSELF. LET THE DAY’S OWN TROUBLE BE SUFFICIENT FOR THE DAY”. WE DO NOT NEED TO WORRY ABOUT TOMORROW BECAUSE WE HAVE A FULL ENOUGH PLATE TODAY. OUR PLATE IS FULL ENOUGH TODAY. WORRY AND EXCESSIVE CONCERN OVER THE PAST OR THE FUTURE DOES US NO GOOD. THEY ARE NOT PRODUCTIVE AND CAN ACTUALLY DRAIN US. THEY DO NOT FIX OR RESOLVE PROBLEMS AND CAN ACTUALLY TAKE AWAY OUR PEACE. IN THE BOOK “THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS”, C. S. LEWIS TELLS OF A DEVIL, “SCREWTAPE”, WHO TEACHES HIS APPRENTICE, “WORMWOOD”, HOW TO TEMPT AND LEAD SOULS AWAY FROM GOD. ONE OF HIS TECHNIQUES IS TO TEMPT HUMANS TO LIVE IN THE PAST OR LIVE IN THE FUTURE BUT TO GET THEM AWAY FROM LIVING IN THE PRESENT MOMENT AND DWELLING ON THE THINGS OF ETERNITY. EITHER GET THEM TO WORRY ABOUT THE PAST OR WORRY ABOUT THE FUTURE, BUT DO NOT LET THEM LIVE ABOUT THE NOW. THE LORD WANTS US TO LIVE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT AND TO THINK ABOUT THE THINGS OF ETERNITY; ABOUT THE ETERNITY THAT WE WILL BE WITH GOD IN HEAVEN. EVEN IN THE “OUR FATHER”, THE PERFECT PRAYER THAT THE LORD TOLD US, REMEMBER ONE OF THE PETITIONS “GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD”. GOD WILL GIVE US WHAT WE NEED TODAY; WHAT WE NEED; ONE DAY AT A TIME. THAT IS WHAT THE LORD WANTS OF US. TO LIVE IN THE PRESENT. SAINT JAMES, IN THE 1ST READING TODAY, BY TELLING US, IN SPEAKING ABOUT THE SIN OF OMISSION- AND THAT IS SOMETHING THAT WE CAN EASILY OVERLOOK IN OUR LIVES, HE SAYS, “FOR ONE WHO KNOWS THE RIGHT THING TO DO AND DOES NOT DO IT, THIS IS A SIN”. THE SIN OF OMISSION IS THE WILLFUL NEGLECT OR REFUSAL TO PERFORM SOME GOOD ACTION THAT ONE’S CONSCIENCE URGES THEM TO DO. CARDINAL EDWARD HENRY MANNING SAID THAT “SINS OF OMISSION ARE THE BEATEN PATHWAY THAT LEADS TO SINS OF COMMISSION”. SINS OF COMMISSION ARE THE THOUGHTS, WORDS OR ACTIONS THAT ARE CONTRARY TO GOD’S COMMANDS AND THAT WE FREELY CHOOSE TO DO. IT IS BEAUTIFUL AT THE BEGINNING OF MASS, IN THE PENITENTIAL RITE, WE ASK GOD FOR MERCY FOR THE SINS OF COMMISSION AND OMISSION. [WE SAY] “I HAVE GREATLY SINNED IN MY THOUGHTS AND WORDS AND WHAT I HAVE DONE”- THE SINS OF COMMISSION, “AND WHAT I HAVE FAILED TO DO”- THE SINS OF OMISSION. AN EXAMPLE IS THE SIN OF SLOTH. WE COULD LOOK AT OUR PRAYER LIFE. PRAYER HAS BEEN CALLED THE BREATH OF THE SOUL. JUST AS BREATHING IS THE SIGN OF NATURAL LIFE, PRAYER IS THE SIGN OF LIFE IN OUR SOUL; OUR UNION WITH GOD. AND WE SHOULD PRAY EVERY DAY, JUST AS WE HAVE TO CONSTANTLY BE BREATHING IN ORDER TO LIVE. IF WE LET OUR PRAYER LIFE SLIP, WE BECOME CARELESS IN THE SPIRITUAL LIFE AND THEN IT BECOMES EASIER TO FALL INTO OTHER SINS AND TO MORE GRAVE SIN. IN THE GOSPEL TODAY, THE APOSTLES CAME ACROSS A MAN CASTING OUT DEMONS IN THE LORD’S NAME AND SAINT JOHN TELLS THE LORD THAT THEY TRIED TO PREVENT HIM BECAUSE THIS MAN WAS NOT FOLLOWING THE APOSTLES. THE LORD’S RESPONSE IS SOMETHING WE CAN ALL TAKE TO HEART. “DO NOT PREVENT HIM. THERE IS NO ONE WHO PERFORMS A MIGHTY DEED IN MY NAME WHO CAN AT THE SAME TIME SPEAK ILL OF ME. FOR WHOEVER IS NOT AGAINST US IS FOR US”. THE MAN WAS CARRYING OUT THE GOOD WORKS THAT SHOWED HIS FAITH IN THE LORD AND OUR LORD REBUKED THE APOSTLES FOR BEING NARROW MINDED AND EXCLUSIVE WITH REGARD TO THEIR APOSTOLIC WORK. AND WE DO NOT KNOW. MAYBE THIS MAN HAD ENCOUNTERED CHRIST WHEN THE APOSTLES WERE NOT AROUND. AND BECAUSE OF THE ENCOUNTER WITH CHRIST, HE WAS NOW DOING THE WORK AND WE KNOW THAT HE COOPERATED WITH GOD’S GRACE TO DO WHAT HE WAS DOING AND THE POINT IS THAT THE WORK AND MISSION THAT WE ARE CALLED TO DO CAN TAKE ON MANY FORMS. REMEMBER SAINT AUGUSTINE’S WORDS. “UNITY IN ALL THAT IS NECESSARY, FREEDOM IN ALL THAT IS SUBJECT TO OPINION, AND CHARITY IN EVERYTHING.” IF WE COME ACROSS OTHERS SPREADING THE GOSPEL AND THE CHURCH’S TEACHING FAITHFULLY, AND YET, IN A WAY THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM OUR OWN PREFERRED WAY OF DOING IT, WE SHOULD THANK GOD AND MOVE ON RATHER THAN CRITICIZING THEM BECAUSE THEIR WAY IS DIFFERENT FROM OURS. EACH OF US HAVE BEEN GIVEN DIFFERENT GIFTS FROM GOD AND WE ARE CALLED TO BE FAITHFUL TO THE VOCATION GOD HAS GIVEN US. AS WE PREPARE TO RECEIVE THE LORD, IN HOLY COMMUNION TODAY, WE ASK HIM FOR THE GRACE TO LIVE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT AND TO AVOID SIN AND TO BE GRATEFUL FOR THE VOCATION THAT HE IS GIVEN EACH OF US TO GROW IN HOLINESS AND TO HELP LEAD OTHERS TO HEAVEN.
