THE ONE WHO IS OF THE EARTH IS EARTHLY AND SPEAKS OF EARTHLY THINGS. BUT THE ONE WHO COMES FROM HEAVEN IS ABOVE ALL. HE TESTIFIES TO WHAT HE HAS SEEN AND HEARD BUT NO ONE ACCEPTS HIS TESTIMONY. WHOEVER DOES ACCEPT HIS TESTIMONY CERTIFIES THAT GOD IS TRUSTWORTHY. FOR THE ONE WHOM GOD SENT SPEAKS THE WORDS OF GOD. HE DOES NOT RATION HIS GIFT OF THE SPIRIT. THE FATHER LOVES THE SON AND HAS GIVEN EVERYTHING OVER TO HIM. WHOEVER BELIEVES IN THE SON HAS ETERNAL LIFE BUT WHOEVER DISOBEYS THE SON WILL NOT SEE LIFE BUT THE WRATH OF GOD REMAINS UPON HIM. ♪ VERBUM DOMINI ♪>>♪ LAUS TIBI, CHRISTE ♪>>Father: TODAY WE CONTINUE THROUGH JOHN CHAPTER 3. WE HAD THE BEAUTIFUL READING YESTERDAY THAT GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE SENT HIS ONLY SON, AND THE WORLD MIGHT NOT PARISH BUT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. THEN THERE’S A SECTION THAT WE DIDN’T READ TODAY BUT AN EXCHANGE BETWEEN A JEWISH MAN, WE’RE TOLD, AND UNNAMED WITH THE DISCIPLES OF JOHN. WE’RE TOLD THIS MYSTERIOUS PHRASE THAT JESUS HIMSELF IS BAPTIZING AND JOHN HIMSELF IS STILL BAPTIZING AND THEOLOGIANS ARGUE WHAT BAPTISM JESUS WAS PERFORMING. TO ME IT MAKES SENSE HE IS STILL CONTINUING A BAPTISM OF REPENTANCE. IT HAS SOME ROOTS IN JEWISH TRADITION AND THAT SENSE. THAT’S WHAT JOHN THE BAPTIST’S BAPTISM WAS, ONE OF REPENTANCE. SO SOMETIMES COME TO JOHN AND THE BAPTISTS ASK FOR MORE CLARIFICATION AND — THERE’S NO COMPETITION BETWEEN BAPTISM. JESUS IS THE FULFILLMENT. HE POINTS HIM OUT AS THE LAMB OF GOD, HE IS THE ONE FROM ABOVE. THIS SECTION HERE ARE, THE NEXT PARAGRAPH, VERSE 31-36, IT’S JOHN THE EVANGELIST, IN JOHN’S GOSPEL, JOHN’S THOUGHTS ON IT. THESE ARE NOT DIRECT QUOTES. AND HE SAYS, JESUS IS FROM ABOVE. HE SPEAKS THE WORDS OF GOD. HE GIVE US THE SPIRIT WITHOUT RATION, WITHOUT MEASURE, FREELY. REMEMBER JOHN THE BAPTIST IS ONE OF — HIS BAPTISM IS ONE OF REPENTANCE BUT JESUS — HE PROPHESIED THE ONE TO COME IS TO COME WITH FIRE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT, THAT THE SACRAMENTS ARE — THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOING TO GIVE US GRACE, BAPTISM CONFIRMATION, EUCHARIST, ESPECIALLY TO TRANSFORM US, TO GIVE US THAT FULLNESS OF GOD’S HOLY SPIRIT POURED INTO OUR HEARTS. AND HE TELLS US TODAY, HE WHO BELIEVES IN THE SON HAS ETERNAL LIFE. HE WHO DOES NOT OBEY THE SON SHALL NOT SEE LIFE BUT THE WRATH OF GOD RESTS UPON HIM. THERE’S THIS DEEP CONNECTION BETWEEN FAITH AND OBEDIENCE THAT, IF WE’RE LIVING UNREPENTANTLY, WE’RE ALL SINNERS, WE ALL FALL, IF WE REPENT AND GET UP AGAIN, WE’RE STILL WALKING TOWARDS THE LIGHT. IF WE LIVE IN UNREPENTANT SIN, IT DESTROYS OUR FAITH. IT TAKES US OUT OF THE REALM OF FAITH AND EVENTUALLY WILL COMPLETELY FALL AWAY, IF WE CONTINUE TO LIVE THAT WAY WITH FULL KNOWLEDGE. SO FAITH PRODUCES OBEDIENCE. FAITH BECOMES OR WE COULD SAY IT FORMS CULTURE. CULTURE. THIS THING THAT RISES UP AROUND THE COMMUNITY OF MAN, THAT — THE THINGS THAT WE LOVE, CHERISH, DO, WORK, THE ARTS, EVERY WAY THAT WE LIVE, NEEDS TO BE INFORMED BY OUR FAITH AS AN EXPRESSION OF OUR FAITH, THAT OUR LIFE IS MOTIVATED BY OUR FAITH, WHAT WE DO, HOW WE LIVE, WHAT WE VALUE, WHAT WE CHERISH. AND YESTERDAY WE HEARD IN JOHN 3:16 READING THAT FOR EVERYONE WHO DOES WICKED THINGS HATES THE LIGHT AND DOES NOT COME TOWARD THE LIGHT. SO WHEN WE’RE SINNING, AND NOT THROUGH IGNORANCE BUT WHEN WE’RE SINNING, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT WE’RE DOING, CONSENTING TO IT, WE’RE WALKING AWAY FROM THE LIGHT. ROMANS — ST. PAUL’S LETTER TO THE ROMANS BEGINS AND ENDS WITH THIS PHRASE, THE OBEDIENCE OF FAITH. HE SAYS HE IS CALLED TO BE AN APOSTLE TO BRING ABOUT THE OBEDIENCE OF FAITH IN CHAPTER ONE. AT THE END, HE SAYS THESE PROPHETIC WRITINGS ARE TO BRING ABOUT THE OBEDIENCE OF FAITH. THIS PHRASE, RIGHT OUT OF SCRIPTURE. AND THIS OBEDIENCE OF FAITH IS OUR RESPONSE TO GOD, THAT WE’RE CALLED TO FULLY SUBMIT OUR INTELLECT AND OUR WILL TO GOD, THAT HE ENLIGHTENS OUR INTELLECT, BY GRACE MOVES OUR WILL TOWARDS HIM TO CHOOSE HIM TO LIVE ACCORDING TO THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS AND THE GOSPEL. AND THE GOSPEL DOES NOT DO AWAY WITH THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. HE SAYS THAT CLEARLY IN THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. SHE COMING NOT TO ABROGATE THE LAW BUT TO FULFILL IT, NOT TO DO AWAY WITH IT BUT TO FULFILL IT. SO THE CATECHISM HAS A BEAUTIFUL SECTION ON FAITH. IT SAYS, FIRST OF ALL, IT’S A PERSONAL ADHERENCE OF MAN TO GOD. THAT THERE INVOLVES THIS ENCOUNTER WITH GOD THAT SPARKS THIS FAITH AND ENGENDERS THIS FAITH, AND THIS CLINGING ENTRUSTING. FAITH NATURALLY REQUIRES US TO TRUST GOD. SO IT’S PERSONAL HERE AND SAYS FULL SUBMISSION OF OUR INTELLECT WHERE YOU ASCEND TO THE TRUTH THAT GOD HAS REVEALED, THAT WE BELIEVE IN THE AUTHORITY OF GOD AND JESUS CHRIST AND TRUST IN SCRIPTURE AND TRADITION AND THE HOLY SPIRIT, GOD THE FATHER, GOD IS TRINITY, WE GIVE THIS FULL ASCENT TO THE TRUTH. AND WE ALSO LIVE IT. YOU KNOW, WE DO THE WORKS OF CHARITY. THAT ENLIVENS OUR FAITH. IT SPEAKS OF THAT CATECHISM THAT FAITH IS A GRACE. IT’S A GIFT FROM GOD. IT’S GIVEN TO US IN BAPTISM BUT IT ALSO AS AN ADULT IS BAPTIZED IT PRESUPPOSES A FAITH AND WE HAVE TO APPROACH THE SACRAMENT WITH SOME FAITH. IT’S A GIFT THAT IS FOSTERED AND PERFECTED BY THE SACRAMENTS, YOU KNOW, IT’S A GIFT THAT COMES TO US IN THE SACRAMENTS AS, WELL, AND IT’S ALSO A HUMAN ACT THAT IS MADE POSSIBLE BY GRACE. SO WE GIVE THIS OBEDIENCE, THIS FULL SUBMISSION OF INTELLECT AND WILL, THIS FULL SUBMISSION OF OUR ENTIRE BEING WHICH INCLUDES OUR BODY AND SOUL, THAT WE MUST ACT UPON THIS FAITH. IT’S A HUMAN ACT THAT WE TRUST IN HIM, WE CLEAVE TO THE TRUTH THAT HE IS REVEALED, AND WE HAVE A CERTAINTY IN THAT. YOU KNOW, THAT WE’RE NOT — AS I HAVE HEARD IN REPEAT, THAT WE’RE NOT HAVING TO WAKE UP EVERY DAY AND FIGURE OUT THE UNIVERSE. YOU KNOW, GOD HAS REVEALED HIMSELF TO US AND HIS PLAN FOR OUR SALVATION. HE HAS GIVEN US A MORAL CODE OF CONDUCT BY WHICH WE ARE TO ACT BY THAT LEADS US TO A FULLNESS OF LIFE. GOD IS MORE THAN RULES AND COMMANDMENTS BUT THOSE ARE A PATH TO LIFE, A PATH TO FRIENDSHIP AND COMMUNION WITH GOD AND THAT NATURALLY, SINCE IT’S A HUMAN ACT, THAT WE SEEK UNDERSTANDING, WE SEEK TO KNOW. WE REFLECT ON FAITH. IT’S CALLED THEOLOGY. THE CHURCH HAS A TREMENDOUS HISTORY OF THEOLOGY. THAT LITERALLY GENIUSES HAVE POURED THEMSELVES INTO UNDERSTANDING THE FAITH. AND PHILOSOPHY IS THE HANDMAIDEN OF FAITH. IT USES — PHILOSOPHY ASSISTS OUR UNDERSTANDING OF GOD, WHO HE IS, WHAT HE HAS REVEALED. AND THAT REVELATION COMES TO US IN JESUS, AND WE — YOU KNOW THE FULLNESS OF THAT IS IN JESUS, YOU KNOW, IT’S REVEALED — IT’S TRANSFERRED TO US THROUGH THE APOSTLES AND THAT PUBLIC REVELATION ENDS WITH THE DEATH OF THE LAST APOSTLE AND WE GO BACK AND TRY TO UNDERSTAND AND WE MAKE EXPLICIT THAT FAITH THAT WAS GIVEN TO US. WE APPLY IT TO THE AGE THAT WE LIVE IN. WE SPEAK IN A LANGUAGE, IN A CULTURE THAT WE LIVE IN. AND THAT SOMETIMES SOUNDS SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT. IT’S HARD TO TAKE SOMETIMES STATEMENTS AND WRITINGS FROM CENTURIES AGO. YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE CONTEXT, WHEN IT WAS BEING SAID, YOU KNOW, HOW IT’S BEING SAID AND THE IMPACT THE HEARERS WOULD LISTEN TO IT. YOU HAVE TO TAKE THAT INTO ACCOUNT. BECAUSE EVERY AGE STRUGGLES WITH ITS OWN WEAKNESSES AND SINFULNESS AND DISTORTIONS. VATICAN II IS TRYING TO UPDATE THAT EXPRESSION OF FAITH TO SPEAK TO A MODERN AGE. BUT THAT FUNDAMENTAL TRUTH OF SEEKING UNDERSTANDING IS ALWAYS THERE AND THE UNCHANGING TRUTH OF REVELATION. YOU KNOW WE HAVE TO MAINTAIN THOSE TWO. IT’S A HUMAN ACT. AND UNDER THE SECTION THE CATECHISM SPEAKS ABOUT FAITH IN SCIENCE, YOU KNOW, SECULARISM LOVES TO TRY TO OPPOSE THE TWO. WE WERE OUT IN THE WALK FOR LIFE IN SAN FRANCISCO AND WE’RE GIVING ALL OF THESE INTERVIEWS IN THE WALK ITSELF AND WE WERE IN A SECTION THAT HAD A LOT OF COLLEGE STUDENTS. AND I LOVE TO GO TO THE STANFORD GRADS AND STUFF, THE PEOPLE FROM BERKELEY AND FROM PREMIER SCHOOLS — I REMEMBER ONE WE INTERVIEWED WAS AN ENGINEERING STUDENT, AND HERE’S SAYING, YOU KNOW, HIS FAITH — THERE’S NO CONTRADICTION BETWEEN FAITH AND SCIENCE. I LOVE THAT. COMING RIGHT FROM CALIFORNIA, FROM A PREMIER SCHOOL, A SCIENTIST, BUDDING YOUNG SCIENTIST TELLING US THAT. THERE CAN NEVER BE A CONTRADICTION BETWEEN FAITH AND SCIENCE. THEY COME FROM THE SAME SOURCE. THEY COME FROM GOD HIMSELF. THERE IS NO OPPOSITION TO IT: THERE’S OPPOSITION — THE SCIENTIST PROBABLY HASN’T DONE HIS HOMEWORK AND THEY HAVE THEIR OWN DISTORTIONS AND LENSES THE WAY THEY SEE THINGS SOMETIMES. WE’RE TOLD TODAY IN THE SCRIPTURE, TOO, THAT FAITH IS THE BEGINNING OF ETERNAL LIFE. THAT, BY HAVING FAITH, WE TASTE IN ADVANCE OF BEATIFIC VISION, THIS FACE-TO-FACE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD THAT WE’RE CALLED TO FOR ALL ETERNITY, THE DEEPEST COMMUNION OF WHICH MARRIAGE IS AN IMAGE OF, THIS DEEP COMMUNION WITH GOD WE’RE TO HAVE FOR ALL ETERNITY. FAITH IS THE BEGINNING OF THAT, OF ETERNAL LIFE, THAT WE CAN HAVE FRIENDSHIP WITH HIM AND TRULY KNOW HIM, INTELLECT AS, WELL. WE CAN KNOW GOD. WE CAN HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. AND AS I SAID, THAT FAITH — YOU KNOW, YOU LOOK IN JOHN CHAPTER 6, THERE’S A GREAT TEACHING ON THE EUCHARIST. YOU KNOW, IT’S SAID THERE AS, WELL, THREE CHAPTERS LATER, AFTER THIS JOHN CHAPTER 3, HE WHO HAS FAITH HAS ETERNAL LIFE AND THEN HE GOES ON TO TEACH ABOUT THE EUCHARIST HOW HE IS GOING TO GIVE THE EUCHARIST AS THE FLESH AND BLOOD OF JESUS, AND THAT’S THE SACRAMENTS, ALL OF THE SACRAMENTS WILL PERFECT THAT FAITH, BRING IT TO A FULLNESS, WILL EXPRESS THIS DEEP COMMUNION THAT WE HAVE WITH FAITH IN THE SACRAMENTS, ESPECIALLY THE EUCHARIST, THE SOURCE AND SUMMIT OF OUR FAITH, OUR COMMUNION WITH THE LORD, EXPRESS IT AND FOSTER IT, INCREASE IT, WITH EVERY COMMUNION GRACE IS BEING POURED INTO OUR HEARTS. OUR FAITH IS BEING INCREASED. YOU KNOW, IF YOU’RE STRUGGLING WITH YOUR FAITH, AS LUIS PASCHAL TOLD AN UNBELIEVING FRIEND, HE SAID, “DO WHAT BELIEVERS DO — BRING THE BODY. PUT THE BODY THROUGH THE ACTIONS OF RELIGION, AND IT HELPS INCREASE OUR FAITH.” FAKE IT UNTIL YOU MAKE IT. LIVE THE FAITH AND OUR FAITH INCREASES. SO WE HAVE TO HAVE THAT FUNDAMENTAL SURRENDER THAT IS EXPRESSED IN OUR ENTIRE BEING, BODY AND SOUL. YOU KNOW RECENTLY CDF RELEASED A DOCUMENT ABOUT, YOU KNOW, MODERN EXPRESSIONS OF GNOSTICISM AND PELAGIANISM THAT WE’RE RECEIVED BY OUR OWN WORDS AND WITHOUT GRACE, AND GNOSTICISM IS THE EXPRESSION OF SALVATION THAT OFTENTIMES IS EXPRESSED LIKE A SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE THAT A PERSON HAS. AND IT CUTS OFF THAT WHOLE BODY PART, THAT WHOLE LIVED REALITY. IT’S JUST SOME INTERIOR KNOWLEDGE, SOME INTERIOR SALVATION, AND I’M GOING TO DO WHAT I WANT IN THE BODY AND I’M GOING TO IGNORE THE COMMANDMENTS, ANY EXTERIOR ACTIONS. BUT GOD WANTS THE WHOLE PERSON. HE WANTS US ALL TO LIVE IN COMMUNION, THE WHOLE PART OF HIS CREATION, YOU KNOW, THE BODY AND SOUL, OUR WHOLE BEING. HE WANTS THE FULLNESS OF WHO WE ARE TO BELONG TO HIM. AND THAT THAT SALVATION IS NOT JUST SOME KIND OF INTERIOR THING, WELL, I BELIEVE IN GOD SO I CAN DO WHATEVER BUT THAT SALVATION IS A TRUE — THAT ETERNAL LIFE, THAT BEGINNING OF ETERNAL LIFE IS A TRUE LIBERATION FROM SIN. YOU KNOW SIN AND THE HORROR OF SIN, WE LOSE THAT SENSE OF THE HORROR OF SIN AND HOW DESTRUCTIVE IT IS IN OUR LIFE, HOW IT LIMITS US, IT DIMINISHES US, THAT FAITH AND HIS REVELATIONS FOR US BRINGS US TO FULLNESS, BRINGS US TO JOY. IT’S A BETTER WAY TO LIVE. OUR FALLEN HUMAN NATURE AND FALLEN CULTURE WANTS US TO GO ANOTHER WAY. JESUS IS TELLING US TO GO THIS WAY, YOU KNOW, BY WAY OF HIM, THAT HE IS THE WAY AND THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE, THAT OUR JOY MAY BE COMPLETE IN HIM, THAT FULLNESS MIGHT BE FOUND IN HIM BY LIVING IT, NOT JUST INTERIORLY, BUT BODY AND SOUL IN OUR ENTIRE BEING. IT’S A GREAT CHALLENGE FOR US. YOU KNOW. IF WE HAVE FALLEN, WE REPENT, GET UP, BEGIN AGAIN, TRY TO MAKE THAT FUNDAMENTAL SURRENDER TO HIM THAT HE MAY TRULY BE LORD OF OUR LIFE, THAT WE MAY EXPERIENCE THIS ETERNAL LIFE THAT HE WANTS TO GIVE US.
