is here before him. “But the Lord said to
Samuel, ‘Do not judge “from his appearance or
from his lofty stature “because I have rejected him. “Not as man sees does God see, “because man sees
the appearance, “but the Lord looks
into the heart.’ “In the same way,
Jesse presented seven
sons before Samuel, “but Samuel said to Jesse, “‘The Lord has not
chosen any of these.’ “Then Samuel asked Jesse, ‘Are
these all the son you have?’ “Jesse replied, ‘There
is still the youngest “who is tending the sheep.’ “Samuel said to
Jesse, ‘Send for him. “We will not begin the
sacrificial banquet “until he arrives here.’ “Jesse sent and had the young
man brought before them. “He was ruddy, a youth
handsome to behold, “and making a
splendid appearance. “The Lord said, ‘There,
anoint him for he is the one.’ “Then Samuel, with the
horn of oil in hand “anointed David in the

Glory to You O Lord. – “As Jesus passed by, He
saw a man blind from birth. “He spat on the ground and
made clay with the saliva “and smeared the
clay on his eyes “and said to him, ‘Go, wash
in the pool of Siloam,” “which means sent. “So he went and washed
and came back able to see. “His neighbors and those
who had seen him earlier “as a beggar said,

but others said no, “he just looks like him. “The man said, ‘I am.’ “He brought the one
who was once blind “to see the Pharisees. “Now Jesus had made clay and
opened his eyes on a sabbath, “so then the Pharisees
also asked him “how he was able to
see, and he said to them “‘He put clay on my eyes
and I washed and now I see.’ “Some of the Pharisees said,
‘This man in not from God “because He does not
keep the sabbath. “But others said, ‘How can
a sinful man do such signs?’ “And there was
division among them. “So, they said to
the blind man again, “‘What do you have
to say about Him “since He opened your eyes?’ “He said, ‘He is a prophet.’ “They answered and said to him, “‘You are born totally in sin “and you are trying
to teach us?’ “Then they threw him out. “When Jesus heard that
they had thrown him out, “He found him again and said, “‘Do you believe
in the Son of Man?’ “Jesus answered and
said, ‘Who is he, sir, “that I may believe in him?’ “Jesus said to him,
‘You have seen Him, “‘the One speaking
with you is He.’ “The man said, ‘I
do believe, Lord.’ “And he worshiped him.” Gospel of the Lord. – [Congregation] Praise
to God and Jesus Christ. – Like the woman at the well
that we heard last Sunday, this is another one of
those iconic readings. How do we come to see Jesus? How do we come to know Jesus? How do we come to
experience Jesus and what are the things in
our own lives on our journey that may blind us
to his presence? For example, I think often because we think
that God is just so, just enough to fit
in our conceptions, when God acts in new ways it
surprises us, it shocks us. We think how could that be God, and yet, even from the
time of the prophets to the book of Revelation,
God is always saying behold, I am doing
something new. In Jesus’ time it was
common for people to think that conditions like blindness
were the result of sin. We of course, with modern
medical science know otherwise, but there are many
things in our lives that can make us blind
to the presence of God. Who are the people, for
example, in your life that are hard to love? Where is God in them? We teach that we are all made in the image and
likeness of God. So how do we learn to
see beyond those things which might be
off-putting to the heart? Or, sometimes we look for
God and miss the signs and Jesus comes to us
like the one born blind, and says to us open your eyes. In the gospel of John
darkness and light are very powerful images,
as are sight and blindness. As we move through this
fourth Sunday of Lent, it’s a good Sunday
to ask ourselves what is it that keeps me
from really seeing God and what is it that keeps me from really being
able to see God in each person around me. We pray for God’s
grace and healing, that just as Jesus brought sight to the man born blind, so too, God may truly open our
eyes so that we can behold who God is and see God’s
presence clearly among us. Using the Apostle’s Creed, let us stand and
profess our faith. – [Congregation] I believe
in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ,
his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died,
and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day He rose
again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and
is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to
judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen. – With confidence we
