spoke in partial and various ways to our

spoken to us through the son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he
created the universe. Who is the refulgence
of his glory, the very imprint of his being and who sustains all
things by his mighty work. When he had accomplished
purification from sins, he took his seat at the right
hand of the majesty on high, as far superior to the angels, as the name he has inherited
is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the
angels did God ever say, you are my son, this
day I have begotten you, or again, I will
be a father to him and he shall be a son to me. And again, when he leads the

Gospel according to John. – [Congregation]
Glory to you Lord. – In the beginning was the word and the word was with
God and the word was God. He was in the
beginning with God. All things came
to be through him and without him,
nothing came to be. What came to be
through him was life and this life was the
light of the human race. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness
has not overcome it. A man named John
was sent from God. He came for testimony,
to testify to the light so that all might
believe through him. He was not the light, but came to testify
to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone
was coming into the world. He was in the world and the
world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, but his own people
did not accept him. But to those who did accept him, he gave power to
become children of God, to those who
believe in his name, who were born not by natural
generation nor by human choice, nor by a man’s
decision, but of God. And the word became flesh and
made his dwelling among us. And we saw his glory, the glory
as of the father’s only son, full of grace and truth. John testified to him
and cried out saying, ”This was he of whom I said, ”the one who is coming
after me, ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.” From his fullness, we have all received
grace in place of grace because while the law
was given through Moses, grace and truth came
through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. The only son, God, who
is at the father’s side has revealed him. The Gospel of the Lord. – [Congregation] Praise
to you Lord Jesus Christ. ♪ Hallelujah, hallelujah ♪ ♪ Hallelujah ♪ ♪ Hallelujah, hallelujah ♪ ♪ Hallelujah ♪ – Oh, Merry Christmas
to all of you as we celebrate
this great feast. As I said at the
beginning of the mass, the great feast
of God’s humility. In Franciscan spirituality, we believe that even if
there were not original sin, even if Adam and Eve had
not done that horrendous sin where they knew better than God, even if that would
not have happened and we would not have
need to be redeemed because we were in
paradise as God created it. But we believe
Franciscan spirituality that even if Adam and
Eve had not sinned, God would desire to come
among us and live with us. God would desire so much to
become a human being like us, so that he could
share in our life and share in our love. Of course, we know
original sin happened and so the need for
the Savior to come for the word to become flesh, the word of God to
become a human being was necessary to save us. And so we celebrate
this great feast of the word becoming flesh, of God humbling himself
so much to come among us to show us how to live, how to love, how to have hope, even how to suffer and die. For we have a God that
experiences all life with us. We have a God who
never abandons us. Even though sometimes it may
seem that God is far far away, but we know that
indeed, God continues in every step of our journey
to always be among us. Sometimes because of
the feelings of God is, the transcendent God, the
God up in the heavens, the God who sometimes
people fear. But this is a celebration
of God’s humility to be one of us, to share
his very life with us. In 2012, at mass at
night at St. Peter’s, Pope Benedict, in his homily, said something so
very beautiful. He said, ”This feast, it
says if God were saying, ”I know my glory frightens you ”and that you are
trying to assert yourself ”in the face of my grandeur. ”So now, I come
among you as a child so that you can accept
me and love me.” I am coming to you as a child so that you can
accept me and love me. Beautiful words that
Pope Benedict gave us, that we see that, that God
wants to come among us. And he knew that in
order for us to really let our love shine forth, that we would treat God like
we treat any little child with great love and
care, welcoming. And so God comes
and humbles himself so that we can accept him
and that we can love him. And we know that you and I are created in the
image of that loving God and therefore you and I
must continue to accept him and to love him in
all of the many ways that he continues to make
himself manifest even this day. Because we know that
at the beginning of this nativity of Christ, that he wasn’t what
people were expecting. They didn’t know that
the son of God would come in the form of a little baby. How ridiculous is that? How can he lead us? But we are called to
accept him and to love him and since we’re made in the
image and likeness of God, that means that we are
supposed to be merciful, loving, forgiving, caring, giving and
when we are merciful, loving, forgiving, caring, giving, then we become like God and then we show the world that God becoming a human being did indeed make a difference. That God coming and
sharing our humanity makes a difference in the world. We give testimony to that by the way we let
him live through us, by the way that we welcome him. We know that in the
story of Christmas, that there was no room
for Jesus in the inn. There was nobody making room
for the Prince of Peace. He came, we heard in the Gospel. Johnny said, ”He came
to what was his own, but his own people
did not accept him.” Unfortunately, that continues
to happen this very day. As God comes to us in
so many different ways, do we accept him? Do we love him? Do we accept Christ
in the homeless, in the undocumented, for whom there is no room
in the inn of our society. Do we welcome
Christ in the hungry who would love to be fed like some of the
pets in our society? Do we have room for Christ in those who are
different from us, in those we may have
judged unfairly, in those whom we do not accept? Because we do not understand. You see, the people
at the time of Jesus had to open up their eyes to see this God
becoming human flesh. They had to open up their
eyes to the newness of God, not as the mighty warrior
coming to conquer, but as the child of
mercy, forgiveness, love, caring, giving. They had to open up their eyes to see that the Messiah
wasn’t what they expected. And so we are here
2,000 years later, we still come here asking
the Lord to open our eyes so that we can see
Christ in the many ways especially in those ways that
we don’t want to see him. In those who are homeless,
undocumented, migrants, the hungry, the poor, those who are different from
us in so many different ways. What we have to do is like
the people of Jesus time, they had to look beyond
the face of a baby and see the savior. They had to look beyond
what seemed impossible that God would be a little
child and see the king of kings. You and I have to do the same. We have to look beyond the
faces of people we meet to see the story behind them so that we can understand and
strive to see the face of God in those that we find different. For when we seek the
face of God in others, we are like the
Magi on the journey, going to see the king of kings and not knowing what to expect. When we open up our hearts
to see Christ in one another especially in those who
are different from us and the greatest challenge for those of us who
call ourselves Christian to even see the face of Christ
in our fiercest enemies, the greatest challenge, huh? Because he is in
every single soul, he is incarnate
in each one of us. And so we have to let the
Christ who is within us recognize the Christ in others, especially those who are
most difficult to love. So, Jesus is the light that
shines through the darkness and the darkness has not
overcome that light of Christ. It’s our challenge to make sure that the darkness of our
hearts does not overcome letting Christ live through us so that we can be the very
presence of Christ to others. Because 2,000 years ago, the word became flesh and
made his dwelling among us. Today, the word is
continually made flesh and continually makes
his dwelling among us even in those that we may
find it difficult to see. So Christmas is a
challenge for us. It’s a challenge for us
to recognize as we do the beauty of the season, the humility of God
becoming one of us and then asking the Lord to open up our hearts
to be like his, to open up the Lord, to ask
the Lord to open up our hearts so that we can continually
be the wise people who still seek him. And when we find it difficult
to see him in others, we know we have some
work to do, huh? It’s a lifelong process. But that’s why he
became one of us, to show us how to live,
to show us how to love, to show us how to die, to show us how to suffer, to show us how to have hope
that God is always with us, never abandons us. We keep our hearts open and
as we keep our hearts open, we will indeed then have
a Merry Christmas, Amen. Together we stand
and profess our faith using the Nicene Creed. I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible
and invisible. I believe in one
Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God. Born of the Father
before all the ages, God from God, light from
light, true God from true God. Begotten not made,
consubstantial with the Father. Through him all
things were made, for us men and for
our salvation, he
came down from heaven and by the Holy Spirit was
incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with
the scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom
will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the
Father and the Son, who with the Father and the
son is adored and glorified, who has spoken
through the prophets. I believe in one holy
Catholic and Apostolic church. I confess one baptism for
the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the
resurrection of the dead and the life of the
