Glory to you, O Lord. – Jesus passed through
towns and villages teaching as he went and
making his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, “Lord, will
only a few people be saved?” He answered them, “Strive to
enter through the narrow gate “for many, I tell you,
will attempt to enter “but will not be strong enough. “After the master of
the house has arisen “and locked the door, then
will you stand outside knocking “and saying, ‘Lord,
open the door for us.’ “He will say to you in reply, “‘I do not know
where you are from.’ “And you will say, ‘We ate
and drank in your company “‘and you taught
in our streets.’ “Then he will say to you, ‘I
do not know where you are from. “‘Depart from me,
all you evil doers.’ “And there will be wailing “and grinding of teeth
when you see Abraham, “Isaac, and Jacob
and all the prophets “in the kingdom of God and
you, yourselves, cast out. “And people will come
from the east and the west “and from the north
and from the south “and will recline at table
in the kingdom of God. “For, behold, some who
are last who will be first “and some are first
who will be last.” The gospel of the Lord. – [Congregation] Praise
to you, Lord Jesus Christ. – Will only a few
people be saved? These people who were
asking Jesus this question didn’t expect the answer
that they received. Jesus says, “Strive to enter
through the narrow gate.” What is the narrow gate? The narrow gate
is the way of God. The narrow gate is
the way of love. The narrow gate is
the way of compassion. The narrow gate is the
way of forgiveness. The narrow gate is
the way of acceptance. The narrow gate is
the way of welcome. We see that Jesus said,
“Many will attempt to enter “but will not be strong enough.” You see, it takes a good
connection with the Lord to be able to have that ability to strive to enter
through the narrow gate, to be like God,
because we’re all made in the image and likeness of God and so it’s up to us then, because we’re made in
God’s image and likeness, that if we want to get
through the narrow gate we have to be like God. So when they said to him, “Lord, you know, you
know, we ate and drank “in your company and you
taught in our streets,” but it says nothing about
them living the way of love. It just says that
they were there but they didn’t do anything
with their encounter with Jesus. For if they would have
let the love of God shine through their hearts and if they would have
really listened to Jesus and then acted on his word then they would be entering
through the narrow gate. But he says, “No, you
know, you did not strive “to follow the way of God. “You may have been present “but if you don’t
do anything with it “there’s something wrong.” So it’s a challenge
for all of us as we come, you know,
to Mass on Sundays, those who watch
on the television, you know, that we can do this and it’s a wonderful thing but if it doesn’t
change our hearts to be more like the Lord then we’re not going to be able to get through the narrow gate. We have to let the Lord come in. And then Jesus, really,
he gives this person who’s probably a Jewish
person talking to him and he says that there
is gonna be people from the east and the west,
the north and the south, who recline at the table
in the kingdom of God. That was a real kind
of a slap to them, showing that, you
know, those of you who say you’re
the religious ones and do everything right, there’s gonna be others who are gonna be at
the table before you because others go
by the way of God, by the way of love,
the way of compassion, the way of forgiveness,
the way of acceptance, the way of welcome even if
they’re not of our group. So it’s a challenge for us then to recognize that God is
present in every person, that each soul is
worthy of respect because of the fact
that they’re created in the image and
the likeness of God. So let us continue
then to strive to enter the narrow gate, to do the things
that Jesus would do, to say the things
that Jesus would say, to be his presence
to one another. Then we’re on the way, striving
to enter the narrow gate. Amen. Together we profess our faith
using the Apostles Creed. – [All] I believe in
