Catholic Kids Homilies 33B – God’s Kingdom is Coming!

By | September 8, 2019

This is the 33rd week in ordinary time, and
our first reading is from the Book of Daniel. This book is called “Apocalyptic literature”
because it reveals a new world that is coming. The book of Daniel is full of interesting
stories and dreams. So one night, King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream. It was a really weird dream about a statue
made of different materials and the statue is destroyed by a giant rock. None of the wise people of the court knew
what this meant, so they asked Daniel. Daniel says that the statues mean that there
would be lots of kingdoms and they would be destroyed and replace by God’s kingdom. Then later, Daniel has a dream about 4 monsters,
God sitting on his throne and “one like a son of man” whom all people worship. This again represents the 4 kingdoms that
are replaced by God’s kingdom, led by God and the “son of man.” The angel Gabriel also tells Daniel that a
new kingdom would come in about 500 years. So 500 years later, four kingdoms rise and
fall: Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome. People are getting really excited about the
Messiah, the “son of man” that Daniel wrote about. And Jesus comes along, preaching about the
kingdom of God. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples how
this world will pass away and be replaced by a new kingdom, God’s kingdom, the Church!
