Bishop responds to allegations of child sexual abuse in Catholic churches

(DON) BISHOP BARRY KNESTOUT IS RESPONDING AFTER VIRGINIA’S TOP ATTORNEY ANNOUNCED HE’S INVESTIGATING ALLEGATIONS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN THE STATE’S CATHOLIC CHURCHES. (KATIE) KNESTOUT IS IN CHARGE OF THE DIOCESE OF RICHMOND– WHICH INCLUDES CHURCHES IN HAMPTON ROADS. IN A JOINT STATEMENT WITH ARLINGTON BISHOP MICHAEL BURBIDGE, KNESTOUT SAID, “ANY INSTANCE OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IS INTOLERABLE AND GRAVELY IMMORAL. WE HOPE THAT THIS PROCESS WILL BRING HEALING FOR ALL VICTIMS AND CONFIRM OUR COMMITMENT TO ACCOUNTABILITY AND JUSTICE.” (DON) ACCORDING TO THE STATEMENT– BOTH DIOCESES BEGAN THEIR OWN INTERNAL INVESTIGATIONS BEFORE HERRING CONTACTED THEM. BISHOP NESTOUT, WAS IN NEWPORT NEWS 2 DAYS AGO. HE MET WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF ABOUT 3 DOZEN CATHOLIC CHURCHES HERE IN HAMPTON ROADS. HE SAID HE WAS SORRY FOR THE ACTIONS OF FELLOW PRIESTS… AND HE LISTENED TO PARISHIONERS CONCERNS…. BISHOP BARRY KNESTOUT: “I DO WANT TO, AND INTEND TO TAKE TO HEART WHAT YOU IS HAPPENING IN THE DIOCESE AND TO MOVE FORWARD IN SUCH A WAY AS TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE, BUT ALSO CARRY OUT THE BEAUTIFUL AND IMPORTANT MISSION OF THE CHURCH / TO RESTORE THAT SENSE OF TRUST IN WHAT THE CHURCH PROCLAIMS…/BECAUSE IT’S LIFE GIVING AND THE WORLD DOES NEED IT.” AND WE’RE NOW BURDENED BECAUSE OF THIS REAL FAILURE IN LEADERSHIP.” THIS REAL FAILURE IN LEADERSHIP.” (DON) IN ADDITION TO OPENING AN INVESTIGATION INTO VIRGINIA’S PRIESTS– ATTORNEY GENERAL HERRING HAS OPENED THE VIRGINIA CLERGY HOTLINE.
