*DRE*) EFFECTIVE TODAY, BREBEUF JESUIT PREPARATORY SCHOOL IS NO LONGER ASSOCIATED WITH THE ARCHDIOCESE OF INDIANAPOLIS. *SCOT*) THE ARCHDIOCESE CUT TIES WITH THE CATHOLIC SCHOOL YESTERDAY BECAUSE THE SCHOOL REFUSED TO FIRE A TEACHER WHO IS IN A SAME- SEX MARRIAGE. NEWS EIGHT’S BRENNA DONNELLY JOINS US WITH MORE BEHIND THE DECISION. *BRENN*) THE SCHOOL TOLD US THEY ARE UNAWARE OF THIS EVER HAPPENING BEFORE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. BREBEUF WAS PARTNERED WITH THE ARCHDIOCESE FOR NEARLY 60 YEARS.. AND TODAY IT’S ON ITS OWN. GREG VANSLAMBROOK, PRINCIPAL: WHILE WE WERE SADDNED BY THE SITUATION, JUST LOOKING AROUND OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR VALUES AND OUR MISSION, WE FELT LIKE IT WAS THE RIGHT THING. THAT’S THE PRINCIPAL AT BREBEUF… GREG VANSLAMBROOK. HE EXPLAINED THIS TEACHER HAS BEEN WITH THE SCHOOL FOR ABOUT 15 YEARS. THE SCHOOL KNEW ABOUT HIS SAME SEX ENGAGEMENT AND MARRIAGE, AND TOLD THE ARCHDIOCESE TWO YEARS AGO THEY WOULD NOT FIRE HIM. WE ASKED VANSLAMBROOK WHY THE SCHOOL WAS STICKING UP FOR A TEACHER IN CLEAR VIOLATION OF THE SCHOOL’S CONTRACT. HE SAID THAT’S THE ARCHDIOCESE CONTRACT… NOT BREBEUF’S. ((GREG VANSLAMBROOK, PRINCIPAL:// CONTRACTUALLY WE HAVE SOME DIFFERENCES WITH OTHER SCHOOLS. SO THIS TEACHER, OUR DECISIONS ARE BASED ON TEACHER’S EXCELLENT SKILLS IN THE CLASSROOM, THEIR ABILITY TO CARRY OUT OUR MISSION, THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF AND BELIEVE IN DOING WHAT WE DO WITH STUDENTS.)) VANSLAMBROOK SAYS THE RESPONSE FROM THE COMMUNITY, STUDENTS, AND ALUMNI HAS SO FAR BEEN LARGELY POSITIVE. WE SPOKE WITH ONE STUDENT WHO SAID THIS REITERATES THE MESSAGE THAT EVERYONE IS WELCOME AT BREBEUF. AS FOR THE CHANGES STUDENTS SHOULD EXPECT NOW THAT THE SCHOOL IS NO LONGER A ARCHDIOCESE- RECOGNIZED CATHOLIC INSTITUTION.. VANSLAMBROOK SAYS THERE WON’T BE MANY. HE SAYS THE STUDENTS’ *EDUCATION WILL STILL BE RECOGNIZED AS CATHOLIC. FUNDING WON’T BE AFFECTED BECAUSE THE SCHOOL PRIMARILY RELIES ON TUITION, FUNDRAISERS, AND SOME STATE MONEY. THE ONLY REAL NOTICEABLE CHANGE WILL BE PRIESTS FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE WON’T ATTEND SCHOOL EVENTS ANYMORE. THE ARCHDIOCESE OF INDIANAPOLIS REITERATED IN A STATEMENT THAT EACH OF ITS SCHOOLS AND THEIR EMPLOYEES MUST ABIDE BY CHURCH TEACHINGS “IN THEIR PROFESSIONAL AND PRIVATE LIVES.” AND THAT THE SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED TO CLEARLY STATE THAT IN ITS EMPLOYMENT CONTRACTS. THAT’S THE SAME STATEMENT IT MADE WHEN ANOTHER CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN INDIANAPOLIS FACED A SIMILIAR DECISION. RONCALLI HIGH SCHOOL SUSPENDED GUIDANCE COUNSELOR SHELLY FITZGERALD FOR HER SAME SEX MARRIAGE LAST SUMMER. EARLIER THIS YEAR ANOTHER COUNSELOR, LYNN STARKEY TOLD NEWS EIGHT RONCALLI WOULDN’T RENEW HER EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT THIS YEAR OVER HER SAME SEX MARRIAGE. BOTH WOMEN HAVE FILED COMPLAINTS WITH THE INDIANA EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY COMMISSION. *BRENN*) BREBEUF SCHOOL OFFICIALS WILL HOLD A PARENT INFORMATIONAL MEETING ON THEIR DECISION TO NOT FIRE THE TEACHER ON MONDAY AT 5 PM. *DRE*) HAPPENING TODAY: A
